Cruz is now citing the 1876 election as precedent for this madness. The Hayes-Tilden compromise ended Reconstruction after the Civil War by giving the GOP the presidency in exchange for removing troops protecting newly freed Black ppl in the South. Don’t miss the racist history.
The Hayes-Tilden Compromise ended Reconstruction. After that, white men violently removed Black men from state governments all over the country, instituted and codified Jim Crow segregation, and started lynching Black people by the hundreds every year! That’s Cruz’s precedent!
He is literally citing something that is on its face a racist power grab in order to justify this attempt to overturn the election in what is also a racist power grab. He isn’t even denying it. He is telling us this upfront.
