We keep talking about how Black and Latinx parents are disproportionately choosing remote learning. But what about those who are choosing in-person? 1/5
At my husband's school, most families are Black and Latinx, and most families are poor. 50% chose in-person. Some tell him they need in-person bc they will lose their jobs otherwise. As in, "they said the next time I try to bring my kids into work, they will fire me." 2/5
It's an interesting contrasts to middle-class moms I know (myself included) sending their kids in-person because they have been underperforming at work & having depression/anxiety/stress while WFH and minding their kids. 3/5
The job worries are there, but they seem to be a vague, months-down-the-line concern about being sidelined or let go eventually, not a "I will get fired tomorrow, and will not be able to pay rent." 4/5
He's also being asked to check on "truant" students, some of whom are there daily for in-person, but do not attend at all when school is remote. Well, most of the "truant" students are homeless or still do not have good internet/devices. This labeling and process *enrages me* 5/5
