Re: The long defeat, GKC on courage: "A soldier surrounded... needs to combine a strong desire for living with a strange carelessness about dying. He must seek his life in a spirit of furious indifference to it; he must desire life like water and yet drink death like wine." 1/x
Consider the Parable of the Talents. Some of us are given great power and opportunity by God's blessing, and can multiply the riches of the faith by guiding the church and society towards God and permeating the consequences of the Gospel in every part of life. 2/x
Others cannot bring themselves to do this, but live quietly in the world and by their peaceful faith do much good to those around them; these at least have put the riches of the faith away and have gained interest on them. 3/x
Those who run from society and hide away are burying the riches of the faith, and they hide the light under a bushel basket. Even the hermits and monks pray unceasingly for the good of society and God's mercy upon it; they do not live for themselves but for us. 4/x
If the world continues down its path unhindered, what makes you think there will be a single stone under which you can hide? If the world collapses, what makes you think you'll be able to step in and lead when you haven't been part of it for years? 5/x
The little faith you try to squirrel away in your mountain retreats will be taken from you, for from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken. 6/x
Take that desire for good community and real human goodness and make it fruitful and multiply. Instead of just interacting with people who already agree with you, pursue the lost sheep who live right next door. The healthy have no need of a doctor.
