I get a lot of requests for free labor (and I know I'm not the only one) disguised as "let me use my platform to amplify you". Feels like a good time to remind folks that the ideal is to change systems so that I don't need you in order to be amplified.
If you will benefit from my free labor by giving the appearance of having a more "diverse" or "inclusive" organization, but I'm doing all, or most of the labor, what sacrifice has there been, and from whom?
If you're coming in with a request and not even offering something so small as, say, a cup of coffee for the time I will spend with you (instead of my children for example) what kind of message do you think that sends?
As much as I value helping folks and am honored whenever anyone thinks I've got something to say that is worth their time, I'm also a human being, a mother, a daughter, a friend.
