
This will also continue to be the most perilous time in US history since the 19th century as people confront white supremacy losing the grip it once had. The central issue continues to be the unresolvable conflict b/w white supremacy & multiracial democracy. They can’t co-exist.
Democracy can only exist as something people agree to participate in. For most of US history it’s existed as an agreement among white men, something they agree to so long as it is exclusive to them. Without that, there’s no real ideological commitment to it. Today is an example.
How the next months play out depends on how well Biden admin—& frankly everyone—understands this to be the central issue: that you can’t bind the fissure between multiracial democracy & white supremacy b/c they’re fundamentally at odds & always have been. You have to pick a side.
USA has never been as stable as purported to be precisely this conflict has yet to be resolved & settled. The social & structural unraveling we’re witnessing right now, incl the botched pandemic response directly connected to the breakdown in govt, is the latest chapter.
Not particularly confident incoming admin w/ its continued focus on outdated notions of “bipartisanship” grasps magnitude of the moment or level of bold vision/action required to steer us toward a functioning democracy. But I am encouraged by movements building among everyday ppl
