Hello, Ohio!

As always, we’re waking up with #FairMaps on our mind. For a decade, Ohioans have been denied adequate political representation because of our gerrymandered maps. But what’s that actually look like?

Check out our thread and then join our fight for fair maps. 🧵
For starters, this is visually what our gerrymandering looks like 🥴

These districts are some of worst-drawn ones we have in our congressional map that pack together communities (like in the “Snake On the Lake” district) and crack apart others to dilute people’s political power.
And here’s what it means in terms of the power of our vote.

The GOP in Ohio has gerrymandered their way into supermajorities in seats that they just do not win in votes.

For a decade, Ohio’s votes haven’t equated to actual representation. That’s not how democracy should work.
So what happens with that sort of disconnect between voters and who’s able to get elected?

You essentially take voters out of the equation and our electeds aren’t accountable to the people they’re sworn to represent.

The impact lasts well beyond Election Day. Some examples 👇
In Ohio, 90% of us support universal background checks and stricter gun access laws.

Thanks to our gerrymandered maps, though, we get dangerous bills like this one rammed through the #OHLeg during lame duck.

Ohioans overwhelmingly support providing access to abortion & reproductive healthcare.

Ohioans overwhelmingly support acting on climate and investing in renewable energy.

About the corrupt nature of HB6...

The bill was revealed to be at the center of a $61 million bribery scandal - the largest in the history of Ohio. Despite that fact, the #OHLeg hasn’t made any moves to repeal it (even though Ohioans overwhelmingly support doing so). https://twitter.com/allontheline_oh/status/1341389778294611969
And if you’re wondering whether the Ohio GOP has moved to remove former Speaker (current Representative) Larry Householder - the mastermind behind the HB6 scandal - from office, the answer is no.

Why not? Well, our legislators simply aren’t accountable to their constituents. https://twitter.com/darreldrowland/status/1346241485117775872
With gerrymandered maps, voters have little voice - not only in terms of who’s able to get elected, but also in terms of whether our interests are represented in our state legislature and in the halls of Congress.
So what can we do?

Fight for #FairMaps in Ohio. Without them we can’t make progress on the issues we care about, ensure our votes matter, or hold our electeds accountable.

The future of our democracy is at stake and when we say it’s all on the line, we mean it.
We’re in an all-hands on deck moment and we need all of you to join us in our efforts to restore fairness to the redistricting process and to get Ohio the #FairMaps we deserve.
