Do you leave for work outside the hours of 5am-noon? If you do and commute on public transit, you'll know how frustrating the lack of off-peak service can be. According to census data, here is where these commuters in Greater Boston live. (a short thread)
I highlighted major colleges/universities with large on-campus populations because students are more likely to work part-time jobs, often outside of typical work hours. It was interesting to see how that played out: let me know if I missed any that seem to have affected the data.
I joined each bus stop to the census tract it was located in, and averaged the stops to produce a value for each route. Here, you can see the routes which service the towns and neighborhoods that have the highest % of people leaving for work between 12pm-5am.
Note that these numbers are not a percentage of the actual ridership: see this analysis by Anna Sangree on where MBTA bus route ridership does and does not match the demographics of the surrounding area: https://www.mbtabackontrack.com/blog/blog/82
Routes servicing Chelsea, Revere, Everett, East Boston, and Lynn as well as the Boston neighborhoods of Mission Hill, Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Hyde Park service the areas with the highest % of off-peak commuters: however, many have limited midday service.
However, that doesn't mean that the MBTA should discount the routes that service areas where most residents commute at rush hour. Without robust off-peak service, off-peak transit commuters can neither live nor work in these places.
Have you commuted on transit at off-peak times? I'd love to hear your stories!
right now I commute off-peak from Somerville to Everett, but I bike instead of trying to finagle the weird 90->OL-> 105 commute that I'd have to do. My most frustrating commute was when I worked at Newton City Hall and had to get around the 59 bus's 90 min midday headways :(
