Over the course of the last several days, I’ve heard from countless people in the Lowcountry regarding the vote to certify the #ElectoralCollege. Like many of you, I’m gravely concerned about allegations of voter fraud in multiple states & believe this MUST be investigated. (1/7)
I understand the anger over the election results. I supported President Trump's re-election and believe he should've won. However, Congress has NO authority to overturn an election by rejecting states’ electors. Doing so violates our oath to the #Constitution. (2/7)
When it comes to our elections, whether it be for Congress or President, the #Constitution is clear: The states rule. Outside of the powers given to Congress by the 15th, 19th, and 26th Amendments, the states are firmly in the driver’s seat. (3/7)
State legislatures can audit their votes, investigate claims of criminality, and even appoint a whole new slate of electors to the #ElectoralCollege and ask Congress to count their votes rather than the votes of the original slate. (4/7)
But without action from the states, the #Constitution makes clear Congress MUST count the electors they’ve been sent. It cannot count electors that do not exist, and it can’t simply ignore the electors or their votes. (5/7)
If it could ignore the #ElectoralCollege, Joe Biden and Congressional Democrats could have claimed Russia rigged the 2016 election, without hard evidence, and use that as an excuse to put Hillary Clinton in the White House. (6/7)
The #Constitution isn’t worth the paper it’s written on if Members of Congress don’t respect it, and so much of what’s wrong in our country is because our leaders stopped respecting it long ago. I promised to change that, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. (7/7)
