Tyler Gregory Okonma, mainly known as Tyler, the Creator, is an american artist who has shown improvement in his music like no other. while some consider his career as a redemption arc, the way i see it, he was always a flower boy that was going to bloom.
young rebel: tyler’s old projects are certainly an experience to say the least when you’ve heard projects like IGOR and flower boy. tumultuous and offensive, he displayed an edgy side to himself on goblin and bastard. regardless, he showed his potential as an artist on these.
odd future: a perfect way to name this group of people. they made it cool to be weird, cool to be who you are. and they were hilarious all the way through it. the chemistry these guys had is unmatched. global talents like earl sweatshirt and frank ocean were in this group also.
musical maturation:
in 2013 tyler released wolf. it was the start of his maturity; showing a more vulnerable side to him, but in the vulgar manner that everyone knew tyler for. he displays a great skill of storytelling and his production has stepped up a lot here. improvements.

polarising:
in 2015, tyler released cherry bomb. it’s interesting as it shows his strengths. take smuckers, in my opinion his best song; he proves himself to be as technically skilled of a rapper as kanye and lil wayne, whilst shining as a producer, an immaculate instrumental.

in 2017, tyler released flower boy, shocking critics and fans as he grew to be one of the greatest artists of our generation. he shows his vulnerability under lush production and something like this has never been heard before. a great choice of features on this too (1)

he’s finding himself here. also some songs have hard energy like who dat boy, whilst others are mellow like glitter and pothole. he shows a case of extremely good versatility here. but up until this point many would have still referred to him as a rapper (2)

before i get onto the next part, i wanna talk about these singles right here. they’re easily some of the best songs he’s put out, but i guess songs like potato salad and okra would make his records less cohesive, so it makes sense why they were released as just singles.

the masterpiece:
IGOR was released in 2019 and in my opinion it’s his best album. listening to this really shows how far tyler has come as an artist. i wouldn’t even call him a rapper anymore, as he hardly raps here. this is experimental music done right. no flaws on this.(1)

IGOR is a character who represents tyler’s love life. this album tells the story of how he likes a boy who is currently infatuated with a girl, but he’s so sure that they’re made for each other. this is a side us fans have never been presented to before.(2)
first few tracks he realises he’s in love and you hear mysterious voices that act like this thoughts, like IGOR’S THEME, lil uzi vert’s vocals are reminiscent of the mind of IGOR as a person. comedian jerrod carmichael acts as a voice of epiphany for IGOR throughout the album.(3)
in the middle of the album, IGOR is angry as to why this guy doesn’t reciprocate feelings back. he wants to get the girl “out the picture” as he says on NEW MAGIC WAND. this fury carries on until WHAT’S GOOD when you hear slowthai say “i see the light” in IGOR’s mind.(3)
at the end, IGOR realises he can’t get this guy to love him. he’s heartbroken. he “doesn’t wanna fall in love again”. he thanks this boy for everything and wishes the best for him and the girl. he loses his love but at the end he asks, “ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?”(4)
