In light of a Dem sweep and likely vilification of the entire “fossil fuels” industry, important to remember there is a greater decrease in emissions switching from coal to natural gas, as there is from switching from natural gas to zero emission renewables.

The US has its lowest emissions in 30 years because of the phasing out of coal. 2/3 of those emission reductions came from using natural gas, and 1/3 coming from renewables. (Source -> EIA)

Unfortunately, global usage of coal outside US borders is still at record levels.

With the wave of US LNG projects online and more in the hopper, the US has the opportunity to lead the world in decarbonizing countries heavily reliant on coal power. Namely China, India, Japan, South Korea who are actively building more coal fired plants every single day.

Not meant to be a political post. Just a reminder we can use the US as a case study of what happens to emissions when you eliminate coal in rapid fashion via a 1-2 punch of nat gas and renewables

If you can’t solve for global coal you’re not making a dent in global emissions
