On 21 December @IWGBUoL’s branch chair wrote to @ucl demanding the closure of non-essential buildings beyond the Christmas closure so that all non-essential workers were sent home, this to prevent the exposure of hundreds of workers. @uclnews simply ignored our demands [thread]
On 2 January, @ucl recognised in a public statement that “in London, the number of cases is rising rapidly […] and that health of everyone at UCL is our highest priority and we also have a responsibility to support local and national efforts to protect the NHS and save lives"
Despite the above, workers, including those in non-essential buildings were asked to return to work. Currently the vast majority of outsourced workers continue to attend work in non-essential buildings.
This position is not only putting hundreds of lives at risk but also Jeopardizing the national efforts to protect the NHS. We expect institutions like @ucl @uclnews to be up to the task and make the right choices
The NHS is currently at a critical point which infection rates are at their highest since March, with hundreds of people dying every day and hospitals struggling to cope with a tidal wave of new cases. Yet, @ucl refuses to ensure the safety of vulnerable outsourced workers
We demand @ucl:
-immediate closure of all non-essential sites
-strict obligations of control to prevent exposure, including new H&S assessments and regular testing
- @ucl must reintroduce the Bonus Scheme for those who remain working at essential buildings
