#Manitoba is on the right track. Though it is difficult, it's clear that Manitobans are putting in the work. In fact if they have the boldness and discipline and choose to persevere longer, they have every chance of reaching #COVIDzero territory (< 7 wkly cases/100K). #Covid19MB
If they can reach that level, their toolkit (incl test, trace, isolation) can effectively stamp out outbreaks if they are aggressive. And they can avoid what most provinces are experiencing: overwhelmed public health, overrun hospitals, and prolonged business suffering.
While Manitoba is the leading example of what can be achieved with bold lockdowns, Alberta is on the identical path, though it started later and therefore allowed more virus headway. Still, if Alberta can avoid the siren calls of early reopening, it can achieve the same goal.
There is no easy path but those that make progress now will be in better position to blunt emerging threats like the UK variant and provide more lead time to vaccinate their most critical populations. It all depends on the will of the people and the government decision makers.
I hope these charts illustrate a few things:
1. Lockdowns DO work if strict enough and with community buy-in.
2. An early start makes much better progress and will save more lives.
3. Ontario and Quebec can use these examples to guide policy and communications/buy-in.
