Reported that Richard Sharp will be the new BBC chair. Very significant in terms of the future of public media. Short thread on his background.
Sharp’s late father, Lord Eric Sharp, was a civil servant turned corporate executive who was appointed by Keith Joseph in 1980 to oversee the privatisation of Cable & Wireless. He also headed a Centre for Policy Studies Working Group & wrote for the IEA.
Richard studied PPE at Oxford (of course), & then went into investment banking (obviously) - working for Goldman Sachs. He was appointed a director of the Centre for Policy Studies in 2002 (a position he apparently still holds), & I’d be surprised if he isn't a major donor.
He’s donated over £416K to the Tories over the last 20 years. His Sharp Foundation has funded Quilliam & an org called the Institute for Policy Research, which in turn funnels money to the CPS & other hard right outfits.
