Where do conservatives go from here? A thread:
Perhaps the answer for conservatives is a middle ground between populism and libertarianism.

It is a movement that is responsible, empathetic, inclusive and brave enough to solve structural problems.

It acknowledges the realities of cultural degradation but not ONLY that.
It believes that if its ideas are true and valid and worthwhile, they are that way for every American from every walk of life.

It doesn’t tell one group it’s exclusively responsible for the problems it faces while telling another nothing is ever their fault.
It is firm in its convictions and proudly stands up to aggression from the media and the Left without being antagonistic or petty.

It is honest with the public about the need for self-control, generational responsibility and a concern for the country’s future.
It reinforces America as a moral force in the world and its people as decent and charitable.

It cares for the rights and acknowledges the worth of the “least among us” - the poor, children, prisoners and the unborn.
It recognizes government is unable to solve most challenges and has humility to seek answers from those closest to problems like violence, poverty, education and more.

It is unafraid to purge destructive forces within its ranks - grifters, charlatans and conspiracy theorists.
It no longer writes off cities and young people, recognizing it wants every vote from every person possible. We should share in the vibrancy of urbanism and innovation.

It recognizes every person has a role to play in the politics, and not everyone needs to be a “chief.”
It no longer makes the very good the enemy of the perfect. There’s a humility necessary (see: 9 million Obamacare replacement bills) some lawmakers and wonks seem to lack.

It affirms our country is best when united in freedom, justice and an individual pursuit of happiness.
For most of my life, the GOP has imperfectly strived for these things. Even with its flaws, it was a party who would say they at least believed in the above. Now? It’s YOLO national debt, grievance politics and impulse-driven disorder.
Most Republicans want a return to normalcy. They appreciate Trump’s willingness to fight, but many don’t like how he does it. Sometimes you need a carrot, sometimes you need a stick. It can’t always be a stick - especially if a stick is often turned on your well-meaning party.
This rambling post has a point:

In my convos with conservatives, both average voters and politicos alike, many just want to feel like Team GOP again. They want to take what worked from Trump and leave behind what didn’t. And nearly all don’t want to be tied to a single figure.
