Can we please start calling these types of "zines" zinethologies? Publications of this nature are not what zines actually are, and continuing to label them as such is kind of erasing what zines traditionally are. https://twitter.com/phoenx_art/status/1346373325749010432
Zines ARE easy to make. Zines are accessible. These are not zines. There's more nuance and they can technically be considered zines. And that's why @binglinhu created the term "zinethology" to describe these publications.
There is a lot of history behind zines and the nature of them. Technically, anything can be a zine but there's a line between "glossy paged art book that costs a lot of money to print" and a zine made out of some weird material. That's why I really like the term zinethology!
It's still inclusive of projects of this nature but it's creating a distinction between what is traditionally a zine and what is one of these indie anthology projects.
Zines were a major part of my introduction to the diy movement, and being an indie artist back in the day, and continue to be a big inspiration to me. I want others to find that same inspiration in them and their diy nature.
I don't want the concept of zines to continue being "dragged through the mud" in some way because of mismanagement of these zinethology projects so I feel it's important we update our vocabulary regarding these types of publications!
