So the thing about Trippier, Sturridge etc and betting on transfers....a short thread...

This is largely prompted by @AdamCrafton_ intervention yesterday + his reasonable contention, that Trippierâs âlump on if you likeâ seems a pretty clear case of collusion/cheating the bookies
Which in a way it is. If you view betting as a regulated financial market, then you are cheating if you know the outcome. Betting presupposes a risk-assessed judgement rather than knowing for sure how the bet ends
But scroll back a little. Iâm no fan of betting but if I wanted to bet on Man Utd v City tonight, then fair enough: I can make a judgement as to the strengths of the squad/form of the teams and take an informed risk and win/lose...
But betting on a move or managerial change? Itâs either pure guess work (so a mugsâ market) or you have some inside info. Thereâs no in between. Bookies know this. So why do they keep making the market?
Because it makes ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ from mug punters and is great for marketing/speculation - the whole circus that surrounds the game. That whole Paddy Power schtick
Itâs the bookiesâ market. They know the risks + benefit
So the FA should have nothing to do with policing it for them...

If the bookies have an issue with âcorruptionâ
of this âmarketâ let them take it to the police....if a crime has been committed, the CPS can decide.
Why donât they do this? Because, according to lawyer friends, the CPS wouldnât bother with this at all...

So why is the FA getting involved? There are only two things they should care about:
1) Match fixing/betting on games you have an influence on
2) Addictive gambling among fans/players
But then the FA was literally in pay of bookies until 2017 via Ladbrokes

Even now they frame gambling rules so that players get hammered for commercial link ups with betting firms but clubs can advertise, promote, encourage gambling, even in developing nations with extreme poverty + little regulation https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7293105/Tottenham-news-England-captain-Kane-campaign-encourage-betting-Kenya.html
(To be clear #THFC #LFC #CFC ended their association with 1XBet after this + other articles published in Mail on Sun and Sun Times)
Betting on transfers if probably the least important issue concerning gambling + football right now
Would it be better if Trippier had replied, âcanât really talk about this as it would be breach of rulesâ?
Yes
Does it really matter?
Not massively

If the bookies donât like these markets, stop making them
And if FA were focussed on player welfare, they would be lobbying govt to get these markets banned. Not enabling them
If bookies want to make this market, they should police them. Not get the FA to do their dirty work
