A world haunted by genocide denial: During & after the Holocaust, as with Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, there was a deliberate campaign of misinformation & lies produced by “respectable” academics and journalists 1/6 https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/a-world-haunted-by-genocide-denial/
The US considered a raid to destroy the Rwandan radio station directing the genocide in 1994, but considered it too expensive (about $8,000). They justified this as proof of their belief in free speech 2/6
Meanwhile, the Tutsi were killed at a faster rate than the Nazis murdered the Jews; it was the largest slaughter of children ever known 3/6
There has since been a global effort to suggest that there was a double genocide when the Tutsi systematically killed Hutu, thereby perpetuating the view that conflict in Africa is caused by savage tribes rather than manipulative politicians 4/6
A 2014 survey found that a third of people around the world didn’t believe it's accurate to say six million Jewish people were systematically murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Most people don’t even know it happened 5/6
The international community embraces moral equivalence because it lets them off the hook for repeatedly ignoring the evidence of incipient genocide. Refusing to confront the power of ideology allows genocide denial to flourish 6/6
