Kind of incredible how little foreign policy ultimately mattered in the 2020 election. Despite a string of material diplomatic achievements and not starting any major new conflicts, Trump exits as a one-term President w/ the Democrats controlling Congress and the White House.
This doesn’t detract from the importance of the Abraham Accords & the sea change in Israel policy away from the Peace Process/Oslo consensus, but these yielded little to nothing politically for Trump & the GOP which may dissuade future follow through.
Trump ultimately did not move the needle that much on other major areas of geopolitical concern. Afghan conflict was not wound down. A sea change with NATO did not occur. The “Phase One” trade agreement with China was full of smoke and mirrors. Same w/ Nordpolitik w/ the DPRK.
Fundamentally, the Congressional GOP, as was the case the last time it found itself in power w/ a Republican in the WH, did not have a Disraeli moment and disappointed swathes of its voters again by not pursuing their priorities.
