CHI/POR Thread (Highlighting POR Defense)
DHO into a ball reversal + ball screen
Covington in optimal help position near elbow, Jones Jr. and Nurkic keep it 2-on-2, and actually defend it well.
Carter Jr. has his issues, but he does flash good touch; hitting the floater.

CHI goes double-drag, POR will switch DJJ/RoJo since that's like-for-like, and that puts them 2-on-2 (RoCo + Nurkic vs. White + Carter Jr.)
Lillard is rotated + DJJ is in decent position, forcing Carter Jr. to pop. Pretty good look, just misses it.

Carter Jr./LaVine DHO/2-Man Game
Nurkic/DJJ play it perfectly. DJJ gets through, and Nurkic is in good enough position to force the kickout to WCJ in the corner. Him shooting doesn't matter much.

CHI likes these ghost screens
CJM ICE's, and they defend the initial shot well. Covington or Nurkic should probably come down w/ that board.

DJJ over & through, takes away pull-up, forces pocket pass, and WCJ has to put a dribble down. Nurkic is like 290, he can't get bumped out of leverage like this by WCJ. Play's like this make me question lower body space.
LaVine/WCJ Side PnR
This camera angle fucking sucks.
DJJ sorta gets through, and Nurkic is in good position, forcing the bounce feed to WCJ.
W/ Covington rotated in help position, he's forced into a floater.
So far, so good for POR D.

Excellent defense by POR, especially how CJM stays connected on the rescreen.
Something I see though, is OPJ cutting though. He's open, although I'm not certain the passing window is there. Either way, a good way to strain Covington who has to come over.

White/Young PnR kinda a clusterfuck of a play, but solid help-the-helper from POR.
Imperfect switch, but Covington tags to stop floater/layup.
Noting this, GTJ closeouts out onto Valentine.
You can live with that.

So, White comes off clean w/ Nurkic in only passable position, White will take pull-up 2's.
Covington kinda stabs, playing off Williams + opening the pass window.
If they don't respect your shot (Helping off strong corner), this is a good way to make them pay.

White/OPJ Dribble-Pitch into a ball screen (OPJ is well-rounded)
Nurkic again in passable, but imperfect position.
POR/RoCo against helps off Williams in the strong corner.
Williams counters w/ 1-dribble pull-up.

I wonder if Covington is helping this aggressively by design (Rookie matchup, slow pop-time, middling shooter), or because Nurkic is dropped too deep.
In 2nd GSW game, POR came higher on the ball screens for obvious reasons. This game, they've hung back a bit more.

Okay, 3rd time this has happened, safe to say RoCo is either instructed, or given the freedom to help off strong corner when he's manning Williams.
Hard, but reckless contest allows Williams to get to the rim, but Nurkic cleans up his mess.
POR DREB issues on display 2x.

Lillard does same here, helping off Williams due to blow-by situation created from poor Simons footwork.
Pretty good help + closeout, Williams just knocks down the shot. It's a prove it/make-or-miss league.

This is also pretty textbook, just a good shot by Williams despite the contest from Covington.
Props to WCJ for that crushing screen.

Not a ball screen, but a baseline drive by Williams.
W/ Young in dunker (DJJ's Matchup), DJJ is in position to help.
He moves his feet, and picks up the blocks.

Transition Runout
RoCo stops ball, forcing Valentine to move it (Now 3-on-2)
Nurkic + Melo are in a tough spot, and CHI keeps it moving.
Poor closeout by Melo leads to an easy pull-up 2 by Williams.

Gafford's not a shooting threat, so CHI uses that to their advantage, and puts him at the top of the key for DHO.
Temple curls, but Lillard fights through -> Well Contested

Camera cuts to player, so I have to use my imagination.
Figure POR didn't do a great job of stopping ball off the inbound, forcing CJM to slide over.
4 seconds into the shot-clock, and CHI creates a wide-open corner 3
This isn't on CJM. He's locked in, engaged, in right spots

LaVine rejects screen -> McCollum helping at nail -> Forces one-off kick-out -> Good closeout + contest by McCollum
McCollum has been awesome in these help sequences.
White twists up Trent Jr., against an unset D, this forces CJM to help all the way over to take away the layup.
Temple is wide open, again.
P.O.A. defense from POR has been leaky.

1-on-1 Island Iso
LaVine vs. Melo
Blow-by -> Kanter's gotta help, Lillard scoots, kickout is open

Late-clock DHO well-defended by Lillard/Covington
You can live with Temple hitting a contested step-back 2

Feels like handoffs/ball screens w/ an empty strong corner always generate good looks.
RoCo near nail, Lillard rotates over to contain the fake + cut by Williams
W/ both weakside defenders collapsed, Temple is open. Credit to Lillard, who did get out to contested still.
