Thread: medical gaslighting
This is called medical gaslighting and it can kill. This should never be your mentality as a medical professional. I am so angered by this personally. Let’s break this down:

Marginalized people are often medically gaslit because of their identities. At one point he bring up diet/exercise. This is incredibly concerning because fat people’s medical complaints are OFTEN dismissed and told to just exercise... and it can be fatal.
Weight discrimination in medicine has been proven to contribute to premature death in these patients. Why is this fatal? Because many times underlying conditions are never discovered because the patient is never even evaluated or the equipment at these facilities arent...
Made for fat people. Similarly, BIPOC’s, women/marginalized genders, sexuality, pre-existing disabilities, etc can all lead to people not taking the concerns of the patient seriously, and can prove fatal.
This is actually a huge issue in medicine and for someone to make a joke out of it is angering. I have personally been the victim of medical gaslighting which has landed me in the hospital and with long term health impacts.
I remember going to the ER because I was having weird prolonged seizures. When I told the nurse, she told me I was on drugs and that the rising feeling (part of my seizure) was gastritis. I’m a documented epileptic and she still wouldn’t believe me.
That was a huge issue for someone who was potentially having a huge emergency. I was completely dismissed. Status epilepticus is a major issue that could lead to brain damage and death. It was terrifying that they did and I was getting confused from my medical condition.
Not to mention it took 7 years of me telling doctors I think I’m epileptic to finally get one to take my seriously and confirm I was with EEGs and MRIs. Medical gaslighting is a horribly dangerous thing and this kind of behavior should not be tolerated.
