So I want to actually address one line here "empathy is infinite" because it actually is not. Allow me to explain... if you're a white woman talking to a white woman this may be true (not a white woman so I dunno) but I don't believe this to be true otherwise
This whole empathy is infinite thing doesn't work in the world we live in because it is one of historic oppression and systemic racism. Black and Indigenous bodies are routinely brutalized by those that have the upper hand in this system (white folks).
Every system that exists in North America today exists because of the theft of Indigenous lands and the theft of Black bodies. Every single one. Think about that for a minute.
And here is the important part. In the context of COVID-19 specifically, it is BlPOC who are most at risk of contracting COVID because of socioeconomic oppression that has a number of scenarios making us more likely to contract it and die from it.
BIPOC bodies are not dying because they are more likely to have co-morbidities or more likely to work minimum wage, customer facing jobs. These things are correlated with BIPOC because of systemic racism. BIPOC people are dying disproportionately because of racism
So yes whilst those things may be true those things in and of themselves are symptoms of a racist system. If you look at the COVID scenario we are currently living in BIPOC bodies are dying whilst a lot of white folks complain about the rules, continue to break them and
Even in spite of all of this have better outcomes because the system was designed to benefit them. The fact that white folks can afford to go to a mall and yell at cops about their rights being infringed having to wear a mask as we saw in LA is because of racism
You bet your ass if BIPOC had been the ones causing a scene in the mall about their rights there would be handcuffs and dead bodies. So actually no. Empathy is not infinite. Not when we are the ones who continue to loose in a system that benefits you
Not when we are the ones who continue to die whilst yall go vacation in cabo. Talk to me about empathy being infinite if we ever actually manage to overthrow the systemic racist system we live in. Until then you can spare me about how I should have more empathy.
It's easy to say stuff like that when the system is designed to uphold you at the top in every situation.
I refer you back to this tweet from earlier (I guess I can't link now I'm private?)
There's something extra insidious when it's white women who try to remind you how they think you should behave, what your place is etc because of this ^
