#TheWeeknd’s “After Hours” era is one of the most visually and conceptually ambitious and eras I’ve seen in mainstream media in a while

A very short thread:
The entire album and it’s aesthetic is almost like a love letter to films like Joker (2019), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Uncut Gems (2019), Good Time (2017)

Films that are essentially “ Mesmerizing Chaos”
To start era, we see his character essentially having a bender in “Vegas” it’s wild, it’s free, there’s the flashing lights. Alcohol. Drugs.

We introduced to this character, wearing a red suit, black shirt, black tie. This is his costume for the entire era
The night(s) get wilder, violent. There’s blood. The character is still trying to have a good time (or maybe just pretending to).

It’s almost as if we’re experiencing one long endless night. It’s surreal, intentionally trippy
The evolution of the era/story is punctuated with the release of a new single/video. So each song moves the story along.

At this point - he’s just trying to repair damage. But he’s still continuing still chasing a high. A good time. Wounded. A little manic.
This all leads to him - eventually coming out “rebirthed”, permanently changed his wild night(s). Different, more grotesque.

It’s a full journey right from the beginning.
What I loved most about this era is that it was fully realized, even outside of the music videos and photoshoots.

The Weeknd had the same character for talk shows, awards, performances. From SNL to the AMAs
It’s a 3 year long era, that would’ve included a tour (announced just before COVID-19 went global).

It was super ambitious, combining the sound of the album, pop culture references, fashion, story.

Truly excellent
