Primary factor pushing Georgia into the more blue column the past four years is Trump. Trump helped the GOP in some ways but not in a state like Georgia where fulcrum of politics right now is the suburbs. The first sign of this was Ossoff's race in 2017, where he did very well
You might say, he did well? He lost! Well I used to be on a youth committee for Tom Price, who held that seat, he used to boast it was one of the more conservative districts out there in the entire country. Then Ossoff almost won it.
Then we saw some other down ballot races in Metro ATL go to Dems. Lucy McBath ended up winning that race Ossoff didn't. Abrams almost won, got within 50,000 votes. This all started happening after Trump won in 2016, in 2017, then carried over to now.
People will tell a lot of different stories about the bigger trend but Trump was really bad for Georgia Republicans, he was alienating people out of being GOP voters and boosted Dem turnout, Dems didn't do anything special to achieve these results. Trump was just bad for GOP.
I suspect that in 2022 the GOP will be a bit stronger in Georgia without a Trump presence and where they can comfortably be part of a midterm election backash to Biden. Then we'll see how much there is structural change in GA vs influx of newer voters+backlash to Trump.
I do think part of the story is that a lot of people moving to Atlanta from other parts of the country helped turn Georgia blue but this wouldn't have mattered if the GOP had a more popular president at the top. These people aren't far to the left, they are just swing voters.
People will come up with all kinds of explanations like Democrats throwing hundreds of millions at the state, Abrams's FairFight etc. but the timelines line up here. Starting in 2017, the GOP became seriously imperiled in Georgia and that's the Trump effect.
I think the story of this election in particular, Trump waging war on GA GOP for two months+the $2,000 checks probably cost Loeffler/Perdue but I'm talking about the changes in Georgia the past four years. It's Trump. https://twitter.com/WildBillWellman/status/1346680730147934209
Yep. Metro ATL is changing but not changing this rapidly, this is people who liked Nathan Deal, liked Johnny Isakson, they just don't like Trump. https://twitter.com/Wordough/status/1346681017353039872
