If you now see consequential power of the Black vote this year, then you can begin to understand the desperate zeal & fervor w/which whites imposed grandfather clauses, poll taxes, literacy tests, etc. & used violence to disenfranchise Black voters from 1890-1965.
And you understand the devastating nature of the Shelby County v Holder decision in 2013, & the heroic effort of Black voters, & civil rts lawyers & activists since then to protect Black voting rts w/o the most important provision of the Voting Rights Act.
Whatever the ultimate outcome of this election, we must salute & honor the organizers, activists & lawyers who have fought against voter suppression & who have been relentless in the demand for full citizenship & dignity for all voters.
