Ji Xianlin (1911-2009), the Chinese Indologist who did the first complete translation of Rāmāyaṇa into Chinese. Rendered as Luomoyanna ( 羅摩衍那 ) in Chinese. He studied Sanskrit at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He received his PhD in 1941 and returned to China in 1946.
Like many intellectuals, he was persecuted during the "cultural revolution" for a decade. During the later and milder part of his persecution, he was given a job as a security guard at the Beijing University where earlier he used to teach as a professor for more than two decades.
It was during this period (1973-77), that he secretly translated Rāmāyaṇa into Chinese. In his own words from his book "The Cowshed: Memories of the Chinese Cultural Revolution":
Ji Xianlin was given Padma Bhushan by Indian government in 2008. Then external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee personally presented the award to Ji Xianlin who was 97 year old at the time.
