3 songs that tell a story: a thread
Gang Related - Logic

Logic tells the story of his childhood growing up in West Deer Park with some fast bars and an eerie gangbanger beat.

In the first verse, Logic raps from his own point of view as a child, sitting on a rug in his house and witnessing crime and drug use.
The second verse is told from Logic's brother's perspective, who feels forced into a life a crime in order to provide for his family.

Logic put a lot of his time and heart into this song, and the product is a powerful tale that is familiar to many. https://open.spotify.com/track/1Kp6WFxRzc0sRBmGSgIYat?si=tHdPeoeaR0iEy1_kXRPNVw
Love's Gonna Get'cha (Material Love) - Boogie Down Productions

KRS-One is known for embedding messages into his songs, and this is a prime example. He tells a cautionary tale about the dangers of envy and chasing money above all else.
He raps from the perspective of a poor kid who watches his mother struggle to provide. The kid starts running drugs for a local drug dealer, and soon builds his own successful drug business with his little brother. Things quickly escalate and end in a shootout with the police.
Throughout the song KRS-One emphasizes that "loves gonna get'cha." His character's family is hurt by his ambition, and in the end it turns out to not be worth it. https://open.spotify.com/track/2HhSYfo82CIjwkKyJG2f96?si=_2bIuObwQJGTmTWz75ZltQ
The Art of Peer Pressure - Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick is a storyteller, and the story he tells in this song serves to help his listeners understand him better.

The track lays out the events of a night with the homies, addressing recurring themes in the album.
The song starts with him in the car with his friends, up to no good. They rob a house they've been casing out for a while, but it doesn't go according to plan and they barely escape. As they're planning their next move, Kendrick accidently hits a blunt laced with cocaine.
The dark beat and complex thematic bars in this song perfectly capture the atmosphere of a night with his group with ill intent.

Kendrick uses this song to explain why he doesn't like to smoke and his cognizance of the effect the people he surrounds himself with have on him.
Rap is my favorite genre because it lends itself so well to storytelling. GKMC was the album that really made me love hip hop because through it Kendrick gave his listeners a glimpse into his world in a way I'd never experienced before.
This is my first thread. I wanted to try something longform like this that isn't focused on rating music, just understanding it. What do y'all think?
