How the majority Labour Government can be kind in 2021, a few ideas: (a thread)
1. Make ACC recognise disability on par with accident in providing support and compensation
2. Ensure all prisoners are in safe conditions where there human rights are upheld including clean water.
3. Individualise benefit payments- disabled people in particular are disadvantaged by being connected financially to partners- making relationships both harder to begin and end.
4. Raise benefits to liveable levels
5. Proactively remove barriers to building more housing- esp. in high price areas- noone should have to leave their support networks to survive.
6. Stop NZ's eugenics immigration policies of deporting or threatening to deport those who develop disabilities or illness in NZ.
7. Mandate a safe passing distance of 1.5 metres or greater, so cyclists have legal recourse in the event of being threatened by motorists.
8. Ban school rules that discriminate on the length of hair- these rules are inane and bigoted.
9. Kind related to 5. Expand on the NPS-Urban Development to disallow setback rules in cities, and to develop a more robust and inclusive definition of rapid transport.
10. Address the financial imbalance against non-motorist commuters by either including parking in Fringe Benefit Tax breaks or expanding these breaks to include public transport tickets and facilitation of active modes.
11. Allow tenants to have pets
12. Improve pedestrian priority rules at intersections- making it easier for children, the elderly, disabled and low-vision peeps to move around their communities safely.
These are just a few things, I may well think of more, as will others. Many people have argued/pushed for these necessary changes over the past months/years and decades and we can be grateful to them for supporting the wellbeing of us all.
