Finally got around to Out of Sight, a film that has sat on my shelf for like ten years. I think this might be my favorite Soderbergh. It’s just everything I love about him down to its bones. It’s also SO hot. Embarrassing that movies like this don’t exist anymore.
Clooney and Lopez are incredible here, especially Lopez. It’s kind of absurd that she’s not considered among our best. I genuinely think she’s De Niro good in this and Hustlers. The energy she brings to a movie is unparalleled.
The brilliance of Soderbergh and how he works with actors is that his films could be silent and you’d still get everything you need to know based on how he cuts to a single glance. I think only Spielberg shoots reactions better.
This is just the exact kind of glossy, movie star movie I wish still existed. The date scene from the cross cuts to the bedroom to the dialogue is just a masterclass. Can’t believe it took me this long.
Also, every single crime movie would benefit from an appearance from Michael Keaton’s Ray Nicolette. I knew he was in this and it still made me so giddy when he and his goofy ass energy appear in the background of the Lopez and Farina scene.
