I did Dry December and went alcohol-free for 31 days.
Should you consider taking your own break from the devil's nectar?
Read on to discover the benefits I experienced and decide for yourself...

Wondering WHY I did this?
ESPECIALLY during the holidays?
I like a challenge.
Also, I made a commitment here on Twitter.
When I commit to a goal, especially publicly, I don't quit.
You hustlers who say you shouldn't talk about goals should take notes!

Going 31 straight days without alcohol wasn't a problem.
I didn't struggle with cravings.
I'm not an alcoholic.
But my grandfather was. And I dated one.
So I've always been cautious about becoming one.
It was more of an annoyance, but I'll get back to that.

First, let's go over the benefits of being drier than Betty White:
1) Better sleep
Alcohol is a depressant.
That makes it easier to FALL asleep.
But alcohol wearing off is EXCITATORY.
That makes it harder to STAY asleep.
Less sauce = More sleep.

2) Better thinking/talking
Whenever I take 7 to 10 days off the booze cruise, any brain fog I have disappears.
I'm able to:
- think clearer
- focus longer
- communicate better
Important considering how much of my business relies on communication...

3) Lower resting heart rate
After about a week of sobriety, my resting HR dropped by 10-15 BPM.
As someone who occasionally worries about their heart... I enjoyed that.
My mom used to care for heart attack patients, so taking care of my heart is a priority for me.

4) Less snacking
Alcohol's effects include:
- lowered inhibitions
- lessened impulse control
plus
- increased appetite
Fun.
When I drink less, I snack less because I have less urges (and I can ignore them).
If you're looking to lose weight, this adds up REALLY fast!

5) Greater pride in myself
Not only did I take a month off of the sweet Kentucky corn juice
I did it during the most wonderful time of the year.
I made a commitment and I followed through.
That made me pretty dang proud of myself.

But, it wasn't all tequila sunrises & rainbows - there was a drawback:
It was annoying after a while.
At first it was easy, in spite of my bourbon and rum collection.
But as Christmas came & went, I became annoyed that I couldn't even have a single drink.

But as Christmas came & went, I became annoyed that I couldn't even have a single drink.
It was the lack of choice I found irritating.
Especially when my mom gifted me this rare bourbon for Christmas.
But, my commitment to myself and to my Twitter community kept me going.
That commitment made it easy to say no to any temptations, and so I persevered.

Here's what I learned:
1) Going alcohol-free is easy when I'm alone
2) It's beneficial to take a break every now and then
3) Despite worrying about becoming one, I'm not an alcoholic
4) Alcohol is a surprisingly large part of some people's lives
