Would highly recommend the latest @thedigradio episode with @gabrielwinant, who among other things brilliantly describes one reason the Bernie Campaign failed which I hadn’t heard expressed this way before...
Bernie’s campaign told a story about how the world works and how we could change it - that the 1% controlled everything but that they could be defeated if the 99% acted together in solidarity...
That story is true & Bernie told it well, but people only believe stories (and are willing to take the risk of believing in & fighting for them) if they have some evidence from their life that the story seems true.
For too many people, solidarity and collective action are something they’ve just never experienced as producing results in their lives, & therefore don’t really believe, even if they want to. It’s a pure hypothetical, and therein risky.
All this reminded me of the Jane Macalevey-ism, that people participate to the degree that they understand, but also understand to the degree that they participate.
All to say, it suggests that we lost not bc we didn’t get the chance to tell the truth clearly enough (corporate media notwithstanding), but that we need to organize our communities & fellow workers in more immediate struggle, so that when they hear the call again it resonates.
