I thought by this point I’d be able to retreat back to my quiet non-radio world of renovating my house, but it looks like @NYtimes #TheDaily and @MikieBarb are refusing to publicly say or do anything about Andy Mills and his accountability with regards to #Caliphate. 1/8
Thanks to Nick Quah for writing about this - There are a couple of points I’d like to make. 2/8 https://www.vulture.com/2021/01/caliphate-controversy-new-york-times-podcast.html
Nick called the tweets about Andy “old wounds.” Yes these events were in the past, but this misses the fact that “being taken in by a fabulist” and pouring beers on coworkers have the same cause: Unquestioned untempered pride that is met with praise instead of consequences 3/8
Secondly, in many instances in order to make an HR complaint or say something publicly you have to be at the point where quitting, losing your job, or ruining your future prospects are better options than continuing to suffer the harassment. 4/8
In that kind of environment, we don't know about bad actors until the people in their wake have nothing left to lose. Two years ago I felt so afraid of the consequences that I asked for anonymity in The Cut article (and I was already working a non-radio job). 5/8
Today - so many miles away from it all - I still only feel justified in talking about the biggest most clear cut events. The many many small digs get rationalized and pushed away. But those small digs add up and can cause just as much harm. 6/8
. @Nytimes and every manager in this industry needs to figure out how to deal with bad behavior BEFORE it gets to pouring beers on heads and basing podcasts on lies. 7/8
