I don’t like to preach and so, since @EllieKitch3ner and I started 2021 with some great feedback on our pilot script Evergreen, here is a THREAD to show you just how we implemented what I give out as advice on my blog.

Rules. We know that title sequences aren’t typically written into scripts and yet we broke that rule. And not just to do it but because we’re confident that it enhances the story. Have we gotten lower scores for it? You bet but it works and someone out there truly gets it.

2/
Subjectivity. Readers are humans who are subjective. Some stories we connect with, others we don’t. In competitions, our dialogue has received the lowest of all partial scores. Now look at this. Much of the winning is winning the draw of the right reader at the right time.

4/
This is not to downplay competition wins but to point out that while quality writing is a huge aspect of winning, a little bit of luck is part of it as well since emotion plays a big part. To some you’ll be a genius and to some you won’t.

Characters. I’ve written an article about crafting compelling characters and twisting cliches with a focus on villains and I’ve challenged you to craft your villains with duality, I’ve challenges you to make us try to resist loving them. And that’s precisely what we’ve done.

6/
We’ve crafted characters that are complex, resulting in interesting, dimensional characters audiences feel conflicted about. It’s that duality of hope and disappointment that creates tension not just in the story but within audiences. Complex characters are less predictable.

7/
Lastly, I just want to celebrate this start into 2021 and the affirmation that we’re on the right path given that we have a year of querying ahead. Our high concept pilot has a lot of potential and now it’s time to find the special someone that will champion it. 🤍
