Things I learned about being an Artist
…by learning to Roller Skate.
A thread where I mash up skating and art metaphors. 1/

It’s ok if you’ve never done it before.
You can learn. No one is too old, but you have to accept the reason your art is “bad” is because you’re new, not because you’re incapable of ever being good. You are not shit. You are just learning. 2/

If you’re not falling, you’re not learning.
You fall when you are at the edge of what you are capable of, and that is the zone where you are learning and pushing yourself. Screw up. Screw up a lot. We learn more from our mistakes than we do from our successes. 3/

Sidenote, fear of falling also makes you fall.
Afraid of making a bad drawing in that nice new sketchbook. Afraid of drawing a bad hand. Afraid, afraid, afraid. At least if you made a bad drawing, you still made a drawing. 4/

When you fall, get back up and keep going.
One fall, one bad drawing, is not reflective of you, and everything you can do. Don’t let it become you. Get up. Make more art. 5/

Watch other skaters.
Look at art you love, not to beat yourself up, but to learn from it. Look at lots of artists and resources, try every tip, experiment with things outside your comfort zone, you never know if it’s relevant to you til you tried it. 6/

If your wheels roll you’re good to go.
Do what you can with what you’ve got, just got a pencil and printer paper, that’s great you can still draw. (and save up your cash for those £700 custom coloured roller skates you covet…) 7/

Use your body type to do what it does best.
Find the art style that best suits you. If you struggle with realism but do crazy amazing cartoons, really own those cartoons. Don’t abandon the realism, keep learning, but don’t beat yourself up because it’s hard for you. 8/

And Lastly…. Remember to stretch!
RSI when drawing is real. Don’t be an idiot, find some good hand stretches and try to remember to do them.
Happy Skating!! I mean drawing!! 11/11
