Whatever happened to proportionality?
The only reasonable justification for arrest of civil society (lockdowns, school closures, etc.) is in the presence of a disease so severe that if we failed to preemptively shut down, society would collapse on its own...

That might be the case were we dealing with a virus--imagine airborne ebola--which is highly lethal & truly indiscriminate.
Not C19.
-C19 has a current overall IFR of .2%
-40% of deaths occur in LTC & 80% are >65y.o.
Not highly lethal. Not indiscriminate.

A proportionate response would be to keep society functioning normally, w/ concentrated protection for consenting individuals w/i vulnerable populations & focus on developing treatment.
Do we care about those at risk? Ofc!
Functioning society benefits those at risk, as well.

But we've had these opportunities. And our leaders chose otherwise. For various reasons, they
*chose to ignore proportionality
*chose to ignore relative risk
*chose to ignore collateral harm
And they did so under the guise of "precaution" and "safety"...

The problem is that overreactions aren't safe.
Because they are new actions that introduce new risks & harms that are unnecessary to fix the original problem.
When you overreact, instead of one problem, you now have 10.

Shutting down businesses and cutting people off from their support networks and denying children in-person schooling isn't "safe".
Never has been. Never will be.
Nor was it necessary
It's not a proportionate response.
