This thread is a list of wrong things the British public believes. For every like I’ll add another thing to the list:

1) Grades are a good measure of education; people with the best grades have got the most out of education.

2) Going to Oxford means you are smart and competent.
3) The value in the equity in your house will stay there if you keep voting tory.

4) More people are unemployed now because of immigration.
5) People are poor because they don’t work hard enough.

6) There was something good about that time we got bombed to fuck.
7) Britain has produced great works of art and thought.

8) The tories are traditionalists and not just asset-strippers in suits
9) 80,000 people dying was inevitable.

10) The best way of living is in a village.
11) Marks and Spencer’s food tastes nice.

12) Any British food tastes nice.
13) Your kids are more important than other people’s kids.

14) The best way to convince people to work is to starve people with disabilities, as some mad threat about what could happen to you.
15) The wealth in the UK is mainly produced by people in the UK.

16) Sandwiches should be triangular.
17) It is better that things are predictable.

18) people commit crimes *because* they are criminals.
19) Other people ought to speak English.

20) The news media in this country is honest and not controlled by the state.
21) More money is spent on healthcare here than economically equivalent countries.

22) Endlessly rising house prices is a sign of general prosperity.
23) To live in Surrey is an ambition.

24) That people actually learn things in school, rather than it being a place hateful parents put their damaged kids.
25) Pies only need a top crust.

26) Moderation is a virtue.
27) If you need justice the best thing is to have a public inquiry that rattles on for a decade and then does nothing.

28) The police are on your side.
29) Life is full of wonderful exceptions, and not just grinding nonsense of things getting worse while we watch posh men take everything.

30) Old people should just be institutionalised and forgotten until they die of infectious diseases.
31) A brisk walk in drizzling cold rain is refreshing.

32) There’s such thing as an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay.
33) City centres are scarier than the countryside.

35) Britain is a tolerant country.

36) That there is anything Christian about the hateful, uptight, racist, misogynist nonsense that goes by that name in this country.
37) £9k a year is a good deal for a crappy, underfunded uni education.

38) The Royal Family is somehow different from all other super rich mafia dynasties.
39) Pizza Express is a good place for dinner.

49) Emotion is best kept to yourself.
41) Racism is something other people do.

42) British Values are worth preserving.
43) class is defined by what school you went to. It is particularly defined that way if you’re a posh media type who went to Latimer, and insist it’s a “North London State School”.

44) Twee is a good quality for interior design.
45) Shopping is a fun hobby.

46) Drunkenness is an admirable quality for the rich and a disgrace to the poor.
47) The definition of freedom is middle class men watching top gear.

48) you think you can dance.
49) The economy is made up of everyone striving, and not billionaires buying chunks of the state for cheap that we all paid taxes for.

50) The structure of work is nationally endogenous and can only be maintained through protectionism.
51) gossip is better than truth.

52) Horses are beautiful.
53) England are a world class team.

54) The government knows what it’s doing.
55) British nationalism is about flags and patriotism, and not rampant neoliberalism and finance capital.
