The story of despair starts in the early 2010’s for Liverpool. Liverpool manager, Rafa Benitez, was shown the door after finishing 7th in the premier league and failing to get into a European competition but the problems go way beyond that.
A poor ownership group hindered Liverpool with debt was a huge problem, and after restless fan protests, the club was sold to Fenway Sports Group in October 2010.
2010/11 season came as Roy Hodgson, newly appointed manager, sat at 19th in mid October with six points after eight games.
Rightfully sacked, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish led Liverpool to a League Cup win and FA Cup final appearance in the 2011/12 season, but was sacked since he only managed eigth in the league.
In 2012/13 came Brendan Rodgers and the emergence of talented forward Luis Suarez, who brought good football but still only managed seventh in the league.
Then, in 2013/14, Liverpool flourished as Brendan Rodgers led his side to play brilliant, fluid football, earning them a second place finish, the first top 6 finish since Benitez had left. Liverpool had scored over 100 goals that season, but had conceded 50.
A year later though, Liverpool finished sixth and had been knocked out of the Champions League group stage and then the Europa League Round of 32. Rodgers continued for a portion of the 2015/16 season before being replaced by none other than Jurgen Klopp.
Director of research, Ian Graham studied the German and gathered data proving that he was the ideal replacement based off of performances for his Dortmund side. His demeanor and intensity as a coach was appealing to Liverpool as well.
Big up Ian Graham! Jurgen Klopp reestablished his side and led them to a Europa league final appearance in 2016.
In the summer transfer window of 2017, Liverpool brought in Mohamed Salah from Roma and Andrew Robertson from a championship team, Hull City, for a combined total of near 40 million pounds.
In this window, Liverpool also loaned and sold loads of deadwood, freeing up space to sign new players in their squad. In this season, Liverpool became unstoppable in attack with the trio of Salah, Mane, and Firmino.
These players, running under a false 9, just clicked. Still issues were underlying in Liverpools defense, with Klopp looking to resolve them. In January 2018, Liverpool made arguably the best decisions in a transfer window ever.
Liverpool sold their best player and chief creator, Philippe Coutinho, for over 125 million pounds, and brought in Virgil Van Dijk, a relatively under the radar player in for 75 million pounds.
Liverpool were the laughing stock in the nation for this transfer but Van Dijk had everything Liverpool needed in a defender, a big bold player with a solid mentality.
With this extra money from the sale of Phillipe Coutinho, who never found his footing at Barca, Liverpool were able to add a world class goalkeeper in Allison to their inventory, as well as experienced midfielders Keita and Fabinho which enabled
Liverpool to play the fluid football they play today. By the time the 2018/19 season rolled out, Klopp had a plan for the side as well as a clear plan for the future.
Klopp drove his players to win like no other manager ever did before. Treating the team as individuals and taking care to every player’s personal needs, all the players insisted that he was the best man for the job.
Klopp mostly kept a light atmosphere within the locker room, causing a positive atmosphere not filled with stress. Add this to his competent coaching staff, which were able to get his tactics across and develop youth player
Trent Alexander Arnold into the player he is today. Liverpool overcame horrible owners and fighting for relegation one of the best sides in the world in a span of nine years.
Klopp, atmosphere in the locker room, the way he treats his players, a brilliant transfer decision, and of course brilliant coaching and development of players turned Liverpool into the force they are today. And we should respect it.
