So a couple of years ago I had a book come out about the USFL, the 1980s alternative-to-the-NFL spring football league that lasted 3 years, then died. @realdonaldtrump was one of the team owners—his was the New Jersey Generals. [1]
And I've discussed all the parallels between then and now. Trump's lies, Trump's bullying, Trump ego. But here's one I've never actually brought up: In 1984-85, @realdonaldtrump led a mini-coup to overthrow Chet Simmons, the league's commissioner. [2]
Trump wanted the USFL to move to fall and fight head to head against NFL (thereby leading to a merger and Trump landing an NFL team). Simmons thought the idea preposterous and suicidal. So @realdonaldtrump did what he does [3]
He lied and bullied his ass off. He told the other team owners he'd been meeting with the heads of the 3 major networks, and they all "loved" the idea of televising USFL games in the fall (lie—he met with 2, they hated it] [4]
He told the other owners he could guarantee an ultimate merger with the NFL—but not with Simmons in office. So, ultimately, Chet Simmons was forced out and replaced by a @realdonaldtrump obedient named Harry Usher. Trump then led the planned fall move (it failed) [5]
And lawsuit against the NFL (it failed). The league died, and @realdonaldtrump could not have cared less. This is a lifelong conman. A huckster. The USFL owners then are GOP congressional "leaders" now. The USFL then was America now. His USFL time suggests a man [6]
