/ We hear a lot from some people about how a lockdown should be truly a full lockdown and everyone stays at home with only NHS staff allowed to go to work, the implications of that are staggering and impossible for someone like me to quantify...
/...however it did occur to me that if we just consider what is required to support the NHS alone the amount of people involved is quite considerable.
/ So where to start, private transport will be required for staff to get to work particularly as the NHS is a 24 hour concern and public transport isn't, so the petrol stations will need to stay open meaning staffing them...
/... fuel being delivered and of course the refineries will have to continue not only for NHS staff but to keep the entire logistics system running.
/Food is obviously going to be needed to feed staff and patients which means growing it in the UK, importing it, factories processing it and then supplying it and yet again the logistics system come into play.
/ Then we have service engineers that work for the companies that supply medical equipment which will obviously have to stay open to keep supplying the NHS with vital equipment...
/...and in turn those companies will require their suppliers to remain active to provide them with components and materials which will yet again involve the logistics network.
/ Telecommunications and IT will be vital in all of this which will mean keeping those networks running with a small army of technicians physically maintaining infrastructure all over the country and of course we return to their suppliers and the logistics companies yet again.
/ Obviously there will be a vast amount of vehicles used to keep this all running, cars, vans, lorries trains, shipping, so a huge team of mechanics to fix the motor vehicles...
/..., engineers to repair ships and keep the rail network going and lets not forget all the people who will be required to run railways and repair roads.
/ I could go on but I think I have made my point that just to keep the NHS running millions of people have to go to work either directly to work in health care or to indirectly support it.
/ So to anyone who thinks we should all stay at home might like to think a little harder about how that actually works.
