There's a group called Red State Secession organizing on Facebook (7.8K followers) and Twitter (310 followers) & calling for a Jan. 6 revolution. Their pages link to a website, asking followers to send in home & office addresses + travel routes of perceived "political enemies."
If you want to see how Facebook boosts and connects these disparate organizations and movements, here's what happens when you click to see "More Groups"
The group knows they prob will be removed from Facebook for violating the company's rules, and they've preempted in their bio by linking to other sites. By the time FB acts, it will be too late. This group has already developed a 7.8k strong following that will just migrate.
It begs a lot of questions. The org knows to toe the line on Facebook and not openly call for revolution. But its website minces no words. Should Facebook punish users for stuff they do off platform? It doesn't even have the manpower to track everything that happens on platform.
Regardless of how you perceive Facebook's responsibilities, I think it's pretty clear that the platform is not contributing to healthier conversation or society here. Just another example of where connecting people does not make the world a better place.
