Real talk: Ted Cruz represents much of what is wrong with our political & governmental systems. A thread.

His attempt to challenge the 2020 presidential election is currently based on nothing more than a public opinion poll per his own statement. 1/
The reality of current American life is that there are so many demands to just get by that it becomes increasingly difficult to pay attention to current events, much less understand context of the day to day events.

The challenges of making enough money, raising children, 2/
taking care of parents, staying involved in community events, & making enough time for self care are demanding enough. Add the fact that due to how our media presents info, many need to limit exposure for mental health reasons in order to stay well enough to do all the above. 3/
Under the most perfect of conditions, it would still be difficult to stay in the loop of what is actually going on, but we all know we don’t live in a perfect world.

Media outlets have their own agendas, and there are large amounts of misinformation circulated by bad actors 4/
which makes it almost a full time job just to sort through the mess. That is time that most Americans simply don’t have due to all their individual commitments outlined above.

Enter Cruz citing public opinion of distrust in the election as his reason to object to it, but 5/
conveniently leaving out the fact that all 50 states have certified the results in a bipartisan process.

Rather than assure the public with the multitude of reasons to trust the process like a leader, he kicks up dust to continue making things confusing.

Why? There are no 6/
structures in place in America’s political and governmental systems that prevent his actions.

The systems in place simply rely on our leaders “doing the right thing,” and honoring their commitment to the Constitution.

While we have forces that drive us to do our jobs 7/
correctly, there is absolutely nothing holding our elected leaders accountable in a similar fashion.

This just brings more mistrust in our institutions because there are no structures in place to prevent politicians from choosing their own power over our nation’s interest 8/
As a 9th generation Texan from a rural area, I grew up believing in the principles of conservatism. I attended conservative citizenship camps in the summers & looked up to Reagan as a political leader.

While my political views have changed to become more progressive now, I 9/
strongly believe that those beliefs in doing the right thing, upholding our Constitution, & democracy carry over.

What I’m getting at is that I don’t think what I’m outlining are partisan beliefs, and I still have a lot of respect for friends/family in rural Texas who 10/
consider themselves Republicans. They are folks who lined up at the end of a baseball game & high-dived the opposing team regardless of the outcome, and I think would agree with Republican leaders like Romney & Paul Ryan who have spoken out about Cruz’s behavior.

My point is 11/
that no matter our personal politics, we can agree on some basic things that make America the nation many of us are proud to live in.

We all do our jobs, and we deserve leaders who do theirs so that we can have the peace of mind to keep going about our day to days. 12/
Ted Cruz isn’t that leader that Texas deserves, and we need to come together to work to ensure that politicians like him face repercussions for choosing their own personal gain over this interests of our nation.

I’m interested in connected with others who believe this to be 13/
true as well, regardless of party affiliation (or lack thereof). We have to hold bad faith leaders like Cruz accountable before we lose this great nation to the selfishness of men.

That’s it. That’s the thread 🤠
