Since we're having the book pirating discussion, I wanted to research some free/cheap ways of getting books that don't hurt authors. Owning books is a privilege so here are some ways of getting hold of books that I hope help:
Quick disclaimer this is gonna be mostly UK based as that's what I know best.
1. Libraries are great! Authors get money but it's free for you. Obviously with the pandemic there are issues, but many are offering click and collect. Find out what your local library are offering here https://www.gov.uk/local-library-services
I know that going out atm isn't an option for some people so I've found some apps that run through libraries:
Community libraries. This may require some research for each area but the concept is that people bring their books they don't want and you get take them for free. My local one is always jam packed with a great variety!
Second hand/charity shops. This one will require some money, but I once got three books for £6 (less than a paperback) including song of Achilles and Simon Vs that look brand new
Project Gutenberg has hundreds of free titles and work on a donation basis, but there's no pressure

I want to avoid Amazon as much as possible but they do offer books that are free and 99p to download and support authors
