🧵I am an Alder and the mother of a CPS kindergartener attending the neighborhood school. My child is not going back to in person because I don’t believe it is safe. I want to protect him, his classmates, their families, his teachers and the staff at his school who we love.
Of course I want schools to reopen. Remote is hard for everyone. The issue is that the pandemic is still here and we should be doing all we can to make remote learning ( which is safest option rn) work for everyone. But remote hasn’t been resourced enough
and because of it CPS asks teachers and staff to sacrifice themselves. They are asked to put their health and potentially their lives and the lives of their loved ones at risk.
This pandemic has been devastating for our communities.
We need to commit to protect each other aggressively. If the majority of families, the majority of council members, the majority of teachers are telling CPS: “we don’t trust this plan, this doesn’t feel safe” why insist to force it?
The hypocrisy lies in pretending that the decision to reopen is about equity.
