so we watched CRAZY RICH ASIANS last night, and within a few minutes, i realized that - this - was what i had wanted HAPPIEST SEASON to be
CRAZY RICH ASIANS and HAPPIEST SEASON share the common tension: on the brink of a marriage proposal, and meeting the family, it turns out that one partner has SERIOUSLY not prepared their person for coming home with them in a high-stakes, potentially relationship-ending way
CRAZY RICH ASIANS succeeds where HAPPIEST SEASON does not at bringing the audience along the high highs and low lows of the couple's journey (AND that of supporting characters!) by keeping the narrative focused on the cycle of conflict & repair
repair — and attempts at repair — continually happen after moments of tension and conflict in CRA, in moments however small; even when repair is rejected (primarily through the constance wu/michelle yeoh dynamic), increasing the tension, you can see that these people are TRYING
the difference is that CRAZY RICH ASIANS features a lead couple who is ~communicating~

(and where the big romantic grand gesture is nick literally flying rachel's mom out to singapore to take care of her — which feels deeply mature and realistic!)
anyway i am on my second cup of coffee and someone else could say this much more lucidly but tl;dr last night i was delighted all over again with CRAZY RICH ASIANS (no matter how infuriating nick is) and newly disappointed in HAPPIEST SEASON, realizing what it could have been
