At any one time, there are a collection of moral fashions that hold sway in the mainstream. These fashions are worn like garments. Most people decorate themselves with whatever knick-knacks and baubles earn them easy plaudits. Thread.

There are fashionistas who demand that everybody adhere to their dress code. They seek to make their outfits the outfits for all. A person does not need the complete collection in their wardrobe, but a few costumes here and there are mandatory.

Those who do not prettify themselves with the ‘correct’ moral uniforms, either through ignorance or conscious resistance, are like the kid on the playground with cheap trainers: an object of scorn to be met with sneers and upturned snouts.

Puritans of moral fashion will label the non-adherent “a reactionary” – but in fact these zealots are themselves the most prone to react. Their dress-sense is, everywhere and always, a reaction to whatever is deemed "unfashionable."

Posterity will perhaps look back on contemporary moral fashions just as a person today looks back on old photos and laughs at the clothes they once wore. But because everyone around them wears the same get-up, few of them realise how ridiculous it looks.
