In the Maya forests, water is a limited resource during the dry season. This event occurred in 2019 during one of the most intense droughts recently recorded, and on an isolated waterhole, at least 10 km apart from other water sources.

This site had twice the mammal activity of any other waterhole surveyed that year. Here, we recorded at least seven different jaguars, an encounter between two of them, and a jaguar chasing a young tapir.

With extreme drought events due to #ClimateChange, both the mortality risk of some species and the probability of aggressive interactions between carnivores might increase as water becomes scarcer or a resource that cannot be easily partitioned. 4/5 https://bit.ly/38YB4T4
