I'm glad someone challenged me on this because it is such an important conversation and one that highlights just how fundamentally broken our systems are for measuring the value of knowledge work.

It's why the billable hour model is broken. Just try billing a client for 30 minutes of thinking in the shower, go ahead.

So instead consultants, who know they created value, hide those 30 minutes in some other "hands on keyboard" line item.

Broken.

It's why employees are valued based on the "ass in seat" model and why employers are now looking to deploy surveillance software for new #remotework employees to ensure "hands on keyboard."

Broken.

Move way from the "ass in seat" model to a value generated one that values time at keyboard, time walking, time working out, time meditating, time doing whatever generates the greatest value.

The companies that get this will win, more importantly their employees will win.
