Joji: from jester to nectar.
(a thread):
early passion:
“we were making songs before we knew we was making songs” he said, to make fun of a teacher when he was a kid. he claims his influences to be artists like lil wayne, gambino and radiohead. and to this day he makes a lot of his music on garageband. impressive.
comedy chronicles:
he made the comedy channel “dizastamusic” as a means of promoting his music, and then switched to the filthy frank channel due to strikes. the channel amassed billions of views, with joji becoming an internet sensation alongside his friends max and ian.
the other side:
after being leaked, joji revealed to his fans that he was working on a project called chloe burbank. this is underrated in his discography and songs you suck charlie stood out a lot. this was his first attempt at making music away from the filthy frank character.
end of an era:
joji feared that he wouldn’t be taken seriously if he pursued music, he saw himself as a jester almost. but in 2017 he left the filthy frank moniker to pursue himself as joji, due to health concerns and a loss of interest in comedy. us fans were very supportive.
transformation:
after leaving youtube, joji released an EP, in tongues, under @88rising. it’s consistently mellow and sad; from the first drop on will he, to hearing the ukulele on worldstar money, this project is what it feels like to look outside the window and see your demons.
manifestation:
in 2018, joji ascended from the “youtube artist” name with his release of BALLADS 1. a lot of experimental sounds here. more variety. smash hits like SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK and YEAH RIGHT, dominated the music scene for a bit, with 1 billion total streams.(1)
he hit the nail on the head with this project. it amazed me how someone who never showed this kind of musical talent was able to make music on this level. the production was miles ahead of his previous stuff. and the music videos were really captivating. (2)
YEAH RIGHT was certainly my favourite. a lot of other people’s as well. one thing about jojis music is that it is relatable. and the way he wanted to make himself “look ugly” with this music video is something i’ve never seen an artist do. to me, that shows how genuine it all is.
the breakout:
after BALLADS 1 joji became a lot more mainstream and he was becoming more popular by the minute. he released tracks that again, were completely different to his previous stuff. sanctuary, run, daylight and gimme love. all of these great tracks kept us occupied.
sweet honey:
in 2020, joji released his best work yet. Nectar. words can’t describe his progression here. his vocals are light years ahead of what he was capable of a few years ago. his range and notes he hits are crazy good. he displays this well on songs like Ew and Upgrade.(1)
some songs are reminiscent of his older style of music that popularised him as an artist to begin with, however a lot have gritty instrumentals coated with a sweet stream of pianos and immaculate vocals elevate this project to new heights, such as Afterthought ft BENEE.(2)
the features were very good too. BENEE was my personal favourite but omar apollo stood out to me, i can hear a frank ocean influence. also, it’s crazy how joji made this album have such a prestige feel to it, yet a lot was produced on garageband as previously mentioned. (3)
end of thread. myself and millions of others love george and his whole career is really compelling to me so i felt like i had to make a thread about it. follow me for more threads like this (check pinned) and make sure to tag @88rising so they see this! thank you for reading.
