In this review, we first discuss polysaccharides and polypeptides used for hydrogel formation as well as common conjugation mechanisms used to modify these biopolymers. (2/n)
The bulk of the review focuses on crosslinking mechanisms for hydrogel formation, including 1) covalent crosslinking (ex: free radical chain polymerization), 2) dynamic covalent crosslinking (ex: Schiff base), and 3) physical crosslinking (ex: guest–host). (3/n)
To conclude, we discuss examples of recent advances using chemically modified biopolymer hydrogels for biofabrication, therapeutic delivery, tissue adhesives and sealants, as well as the formation of interpenetrating network biopolymer hydrogels. (4/n)
