The lack of secure bike parking is one of the most-cited reasons would-be cyclists give for not riding more. And nearly all want more of it.

Building more bike parking citywide is a relatively easy way to help make biking a viable option for more New Yorkers.
Right now, there's a MASSIVE inequity in how NYC allots free car parking compared to free bike parking, despite more NYers owning a bike than a car...and bike parking taking up a LOT less space.

In the space needed to park only 1 car, we can create 7-10 spaces to park bikes.
Ask any bike owner & you’ll hear a horror story of a stolen bike. It's not just an inconvenience. It can mean losing a job, access to transit.

With bicycling booming during #COVID19 the time is now for Mayor de Blasio to fulfill & improve long-overdue promises for bike parking.
Bike theft most impacts those who can least afford it, like working cyclists.

Lower-income New Yorkers are also more likely to rely on a bicycle for transportation over recreation, and less likely to live or work in buildings that offer bicycle storage. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/14/nyregion/bike-thefts-nyc.html
The lack of bike parking was bad enough before the COVID #BikeBoom, but after a 57% increase in New Yorkers opting onto two wheels in 2020, there has been NO meaningful increase in secure bike parking.

In fact, New York City has long put bike parking on the back burner.

Over the current and past mayoral administrations, the City has failed to deliver on *ELEVEN* separate plans to improve bicycle parking.

We’ve also fallen wayyy behind other cities.
Some #BikeParkingNYC promises the City hasn't fulfilled over the years:

❌Building bike parking near transit hubs.

❌Adding 1,500 bike parking spaces annually.

❌Piloting secure bike parking in shipping containers & lockers.

❌Creating an interactive map of bike parking.
The Bloomberg administration increased bike rack installations to 2,800 installations annually.

The de Blasio administration slowed this by about half.

This is *despite* bike parking having a strong role to play in #VisionZero and encouraging more cycling overall.
And the kicker: Creating more bike parking is ✅✅✅ for the local economy.

Research from other big cities shows that bike parking earns business MORE revenue than car parking. This is a great way to support local businesses when they need it most.

Bike parking must expand, starting in lower income, communities of color, where there's been inequitable investment in street infrastructure.

NYC must work with partners like the MTA to build 🚲 parking near transit hubs & with the private sector too to quickly grow 🚲 parking.
SIGN OUR PETITION today calling on Mayor de Blasio to prioritize safe, secure bike parking for New Yorkers.

More bike parking = more bikes on the road, safer streets, cleaner air, a more equitable city, and better economy.

We can't wait any longer. https://p2a.co/xMuc2Mx
