A thread - lessons learned for primary school remote learning at lockdown? Our Irish national @CSLstudyUCD found key issues and here I overview 4 and give my own reponse... plus I dare to mention the unpopular idea... for more see our reports here http://www.cslstudy.ie
1. Principals were stressed - they felt there was a lack of departmental communication followed by floods of communication - suggestion is to form local support groups of schools to joint problem solve and help each other.
2. Children's learning was, in most cases, reduced to 30 mins - 1 hr per day - mainly English and maths. Other subjects were deprioritised. Suggestion - teach science, history, music, and art - embed English and maths - so creativity and critical thinking is better supported.
3. Many parents did not enjoy remote learning - participation suffered bc of parent work and lack of child motivation. Suggestion - let parents and children choose their own weekly topic (e.g. cats, cars) and submit writing, math and art using See Saw. Motivate through curiosity.
4. Children mostly missed school because of missing friends. We found around 70% of primary schools did not use video conferencing. Suggestion - weekly / bi-weekly video conference to connect children - socialising and social skills the focus - maybe drama and news of the week?
5. Learning loss generally occurs through *reduced time learning*. To promote social equality and to benefit all children, have optional learning now and open schools for 2/3 weeks in summer. Or face learning loss for a second year in a row. @simonmlewis 'the unpopular idea'
Finally, I am not (currently) teaching in schools although I am a teacher. So all of the heros and heroines in primary schools right now can tell you better than I can what will work. Respect for their bravery and dedication to children.
